Running Horse Resources Inc.started in 1988 as a proprietorship called Mark I Hydrocarbons. This company incorporated in 1994 as Optima Consultants Ltd. and was renamed Running Horse Resources Inc. in 1998 to commemorate the Year of the Cowboy in Calgary.

Running Horse currently contracts wellsiters chosen for their experience, dependability, skills, and personality. Several geologists are Independents who sub-contract to Running Horse Resources to increase their days in the field.
